Community Engagement Assistant - Kelowna

The BC Cycling Coalition is excited to offer two positions this summer which will play a large role in expanding our activities and outreach efforts on provincial and local cycling issues in the Kelowna area. Applicants must be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs. See Qualifications below for more details.

The Community Engagement Assistants will be front runners in engaging with community members and communicating the work that the BC Cycling Coalition, the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition and other cycling groups are undertaking. There will also be opportunities to meet and work with local, provincial, national and international active transportation experts.

Duration: 9 weeks starting May 17th

Schedule: 30 hours per week - some evenings and weekends required

Compensation: $14.00 per hour

Location: Kelowna, BC

Main role

  • Engage with a wide audience in conversations about cycling & walking safety, infrastructure and design.

  • Conduct outreach activities at major events this summer in Kelowna Area, and on-street outreach

  • Articulate the BC Cycling Coalition’s various activities and objectives to individuals, business owners, and stakeholders

Tasks and Responsibilities

Research and Planning

  • Plan outreach at community events and Bike to Work Week - recommend events, and logistics

  • Research and help design survey(s)

  • Compile and produce report on survey results

  • Data Entry of new leads into NationBuilder using systematized tagging, and updating database with all outreach activities

  • Assistance with planning documentation, tracking and reporting

  • Collaborate developing recommendations for active transportation policy based on gathered community input


  • On-street outreach in high traffic public spaces will be conducted with the hours not needed for the main events.

  • Engage in conversations with the general public, business owners, and potential partners

Coordination and Logistics

  • Plan, organize, and prepare materials required for outreach at events (print flyers, survey and sign-up sheets)

  • Coordinate the logistics for supplies and materials needed at outreach events

  • Help coordinate and correspond with volunteers


  • Help build relationships with businesses

  • Work in collaboration with the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition and other organizations at events


Applicants must have been a student in 2016/2017, and intend to be in school on a full-time basis in the next school year, 2018/2019, to qualify for this position.

Applicants must be between the age of 15 and 30 at the start of employment.

* This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs government program, and therefore applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada, or be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. All applicants must be legally entitled to work in BC.

Availability for outreach activities and meetings, including evenings and weekends.

Skills and Experience

  • Enthusiastic. Loves talking to people. Excellent interpersonal skills. Approachable. Good listener.

  • Experience with volunteer coordination

  • Willingness to ask for other’s opinions about active transportation and infrastructure.

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about cycling and walking. Existing knowledge of the cycling community, and cycling policies and best practices an asset

  • Reliable, and committed to creating positive change

  • Ability to work with others and comfortable working independently

  • Ability to travel to public events at various locations as needed around the Kelowna area

  • Experience with a CRMs is a bonus. We use NationBuilder.


This position will extend over 9 weeks beginning on May 17th, with some flexibility to extend the position if a vacation week is required within the specified 9 week period. Both positions are 30 hours a week, with required availability on select evening and weekends.

Compensation: $14.00 per hour (30 hours a week for 9 weeks), required standard employee benefits
