  • Supporting the Communities on the Move Declaration for better cycling, walking and transit. 
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive Active Transportation Strategy including investment, safe all ages and abilities designs and education.
  • Investing $100 million per year over 10 years in protected bike lanes, paths, sidewalks and safer intersections.
  • Updates to the Motor Vehicle Act including a safe passing distance law, 1.5m and reduced speeds.

will partner with communities to make travelling safer for people walking, using mobility aid devices, riding bicycles and using other forms of active transportation.  Our $7 billion dollar infrastructure commitment will provide opportunities for communities to partner with the province to improve community infrastructure, including sidewalks and pedestrian pathways. In addition, our Clean Growth, Climate Action plan includes actions to support communities improving low-carbon transportation options such as walking and cycling.

As part of our integrated transportation strategy, a B.C. Green government will promote healthy and sustainable transportation choices. Initiatives will include transportation demand management strategies to reduce driving and encourage the increased adoption of alternative transportation, such as walking and cycling. Specific initiatives that a B.C. Green government will consider include investment in walking and biking infrastructure; charging and safe storage facilities for electric bicycles; and ensuring that road configurations and commuter routes are friendly for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. We will also expand the provision of information available to British Columbians about healthy and sustainable transportation choices in order to promote cycling and walking.

As part of our ten-year transportation plan, BC on the Move, Today’s BC Liberals committed to increasing cycling funding by 50%. Since launching BC on the Move in 2015, we’ve exceeded this commitment and provided $21.9 million in provincial funding to local governments, resulting in more than 70 cycling improvement projects. 

will build on current investments and will work with communities to determine their highest priorities for the allocation of our additional $7 billion infrastructure fund. We have committed to making cycling, walking and other forms of active transportation safer and more accessible, and we will work with communities to determine what investments are needed.

Funding for upgrading  cycling & walking facilities on Provincial Roads and Bridge  absolutely committed to integrating cycling infrastructure as we undertake new construction and improvements on provincial highways.  Formed cycling working groups for Massey Bridge to ensure that the replacement bridge is integrated into the regional cycling network and the Lower Lynn Improvement Project. 

Our commitment to invest an additional $7 billion in infrastructure upgrades will allow us to work with communities on priority upgrades to cycling and walking facilities located on provincial roads and bridges.

We support a safer passing law, which will protect the safety of cyclists and pedestrians and encourage more people to adopt these choices.  

Measures to protect people cycling and walking by reducing motor vehicle speed

Through our partnerships with the RCMP, local police, ICBC and government traffic engineers, we regularly review the speed limits on our roadways. Speed limits are set using internationally accepted practices on a case-by-case basis for the specific roadway, and includes consideration of factors such as the ambient speed, safety history, road design, mix of traffic and the amount of roadside development.

We will continue to review speed limits on a case-by-case basis.

 
The BC NDP believes that road speeds should be set based on community needs and the best available evidence. We’re seeing many communities choosing to lower speeds in certain areas that are heavily used by pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users and we support community choice in this matter.  We will consider a number of measures to protect cyclists and pedestrians through speed reductions. Initiatives that we will consider include exploring speed monitoring options and enacting a zero tolerance for speeding policy. 
Other Safety Measures As committed to in B.C. on the Move, our government is widening the shoulders on corridors that are used by many cyclists. This will improve safety and comfort by adding space between cyclists and passing motorists. Sweeping reduces gravel and other debris, making corridors safer for cyclists. For example, we have completed widening on Highway 14 and provisions for additional sweeping are will be included in new maintenance contract language. Design is one of the biggest drivers of road safety. Our $7 billion investment in infrastructure will create opportunities for communities to improve the safety of our roads, including by supporting dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.   In addition to the initiatives outlined above to reduce motor vehicle speed, we would work to empower municipalities to take measures that they deem necessary to protect the safety of people cycling and walking. 
Fund and implement a comprehensive cycling touring strategy

work with Destination British Columbia, local governments and stakeholders to promote cycling tourism in B.C., which we have implemented in the South Okanagan. Working with our partners, signs were installed across the region to help identify routes for cyclists to follow.  The City of Penticton partnered with local cycling shops to build a “bike hub” at the Peach Plaza, providing a bike pump, racks, repair tools and water bottle filling station for cyclists to use at no charge.

Additionally, the new South Okanagan Similkameen Cycling Guide – a co-operative effort between South Okanagan local governments – shows the array of cycling trails and routes throughout the region in a convenient, foldable pocket map easy for cyclists to carry.  Today’s BC Liberals are committed to expanding this model to other regions across the province to help increase cycling tourism.

would be a champion of BC tourism, including cycle tourism, however we have not budgeted for a specific initiative and believe the single best way to improve cycle tourism is to make cycling safer and more accessible.

Making cycle skills training available for every child in the province
