How cycling could help the Paris climate talks change the world

From the Guardian, which is often has great cycling articles:

As the great and good gather in Paris for climate change talks, it’s time to consider what role the humble bike can play in combating global warming. Amid all the talk about the prosperity of developing nations and China’s coal addiction, bikes might seem a bit trivial, and will likely get little mention at the summit. But this is unfair.

Transport is a major contributor to overall greenhouse gas emissions – in most nations the second-biggest element after energy generation.

One of the most exhaustive studies was carried out by the European Cycling Federation (ECF) in 2011. Overall, the ECF study calculated that if all the EU’s nations achieved Danish levels of cycling this alone would account for between 5% and 11% of the emissions reductions needed to reach the EU’s official 2020 emissions targets, and would be between 57% and 125% of the reduction needed in transport emissions.

The BC Climate Leadership Team’s recommendations to the Government include the possibility of using Carbon Tax revenue to fund cycling and walking infrastructure. They also acknowledge the importance in the short term of the creation of communities more conducive to transit, walking and biking.

These recommendations are good steps but we still need to work hard to convince the BC Government to enable everyone in Province to cycle and walk for their daily trips by investing $1 billion over ten years in cycling and walking. Please sign the petition and share with your friends.
