    Dear Commissioners,

I urge the Park Board to improve the dangerous segment of the Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area immediately. This section from the Burrard Bridge west to Balsam Street is one of the last unsafe sections of the iconic 28 km Seaside Greenway.

The route through this incredibly well-used section of the Greenway either forces people walking and biking to share a narrow asphalt path or else forces people to ride on roads with heavy traffic and parking on both sides as well as through an extremely busy parking lot. People choose to bike on the Greenway because it is perhaps the most safe, scenic, and flat route in Vancouver and as a result it attracts people of all ages and abilities, including many children, novice, and recreational cyclists. The condition of the Greenway in this section not only deters those people on bikes to continue westward to Jericho and Spanish Banks, but it is also dangerous to them as they deal with conflicts with inattentive motorists on the roads and is unsafe for both people cycling and walking on the busy shared path. Furthermore, shared mixed-use paths (MUPs) are no longer best practice cycling infrastructure. Retrofits to the Seaside- Falsecreek pathway and sections of the Arbutus Greenway Interim Pathway have separate space allocated for people cycling and walking. The Seaside Greenway at Kits Beach path should follow suit.

I look forward to hearing that you will be acting on this issue urgently.

    Dear Commissioners,

As a regular user, I would like to ask the commissioners to act to improve the dangerous segment of the Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area. The section from the Bridge west to Balsam Street is one of the least safe and most confusing sections of the iconic 28 km Seaside Greenway.

The route through this incredibly well-used section of the Greenway either forces people walking and biking to share a narrow asphalt path or forces people to ride on roads like Cornwall Avenue with heavy traffic and parking on both sides as well as through an extremely busy parking lot. People choose to bike on the Greenway because it is perhaps the most safe, scenic, and flat route in Vancouver and as a result it attracts people of all ages and abilities, including many children, novice, and recreational cyclists. My son regularly navigates the parking lot despite vehicles reversing into the cycle path. The condition of the Greenway in this section not only deters those people on bikes to continue westward to Jericho and Spanish Banks, but it is also dangerous to them as they deal with conflicts with inattentive motorists on the roads and is unsafe for both people cycling and walking on the busy shared path.

I look forward to hearing that you will be acting on this issue urgently.

    Regards,

    Reuben Ford

I have hip osteoarthritis and cycling has allowed me mobility while I implement lifestyle changes such as a yoga routine and weight loss, to avoid hip replacement surgery (which is expensive for the government).

hi – I support HUB’s advocacy for improvements to the bikeway along Cornwall, between Cypress and Trafalgar. This is a dangerous segment of an otherwise incredible bike route. I cycle it 3-4 times per week during rush hour, and it really isn’t comfortable cycling so close to parked cars, rushing traffic, and/or pedestrians and dogs.

As an active senior who cycles 3,000 km a year around and about Vancouver for chores and for recreational exercise, I appreciate the commitment our city has to making biking and walking safer for everyone. As both a cyclist and walker I advocate for complete separated paths – physically separated paths from cars and then clear separate paths for walkers and cyclists.

I have friends who live in that area and everytime I visit I have to exercise extra caution and they have expressed the same opinions. Vancouver is a lovely city to bike around and I would love to bike more – this would go a long way towards that goal as well.

I look forward to your favourable response, thank you.

Every time I visit Vancouver I enjoy many bike-friendly amenities but there are still gaps that need improvements. The section by Kitsilano Beach Park in particular is one encounter frequently as it is along the route to Jericho Beach YH.

I hope people are actively planning improvements that I will see when I come for Pride Week next year.

Cycling a section of the Seaside Greenway between Burrard and Balsam presents many opportunities for collisions with pedestrians and vehicles and always requires extreme attentiveness and as much eye contact as possible. I urge the Park Board to explore options for separating the three types of road users to make it safer for all. I use that route frequently while cycling during the summer and always wondered why the bike route takes one through a busy parking lot with 2-way traffic and along a pathway shared with pedestrians. I travel slowly but am quite aware that not all cyclists do, which only raises the ire of pedestrians who have a right to be upset by the dangers imposed. We can do better.

This is an embarrassment to our city park system- that one of our most popular parks with a multitude of uses doggedly refuses to accommodate one segment of users.

This is not hard to fix. Please do it.

    Thanks

    Hello Commissioners

Yes this is another letter urging you to fix the Greenway near Kits Beach.

I love going to Kits Park to swim in the pool, hang out on the beach, meet a friend at the restaurant or pass through on my way to another destination.

I am most often on my bike but never know where the proper route is. This is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians, especially in the summer months when there are lots of people enjoying the park.

Please make Kits Park a priority with this year’s park improvements.

Hi, this part of the seawall, from the Burrard Bridge west to Balsam Street, that goes through the parking lot, is quite dangerous, specially on busy weekends, the bike paths get full of pedestrians, for cyclists is hard to understand where you are supposed to go, and the cars can easily back out without seeing cyclists… Being such a small part of the whole Greenway, it would be really worth it to fix it… because this bikeway goes through residential areas and is mostly flat, I imagine it will be used by kids a lot, so this is really a concern!

I urge the Park Board to improve the dangerous segment of the Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area immediately. This section from the Burrard Bridge west to Balsam Street is one of the last unsafe sections of the iconic 28 km Seaside Greenway.

I frequently visit Kits Pool in the summer months, often by bike, so I have observed at first hand the issues with this area. The route through this section of the Greenway currently requires cyclists to navigate a car park, interacting with cars reversing in and out of spaces where the drivers view is restricted. Other places involved a narrow path, or riding on a street with two lanes of parking. I can easily imagine how the current situation could lead to parents with children and less experienced cyclists to leave their bikes at home next time

The Greenway is one of Vancouver’s greatest assets, not just for keen cyclists but for people of all ages on and off bikes, and I look forward to it being finished to the standard it deserves by filling in this last remaining section.
