Erika Rathje commented on Electric Bike Emailer 2018-11-29 22:19:11 -0800My dad rides his e-bike everywhere. He’s 73. He could be driving a minivan, putting pressure on both roadspace and the healthcare system. He even has to deal with lacklustre cycling infrastructure. But he does it because he loves it and because it’s a very economical and efficient way to get around. Unfortunately, when he bought another e-bike recently he had to pay a couple hundred dollars in PST. He wouldn’t for a regular bike. This doesn’t make sense.
We need to do all we can to encourage more people to make more trips by bike. Creating barriers like a higher cost to this highly beneficial mode of transport doesn’t make sense. I had to pay extra taxes when I bought my (non-electric) bike in 2010. My friend, a senior and retiree, just paid almost $400 in sales taxes to get an electric bike. She doesn’t own a car and this is how she gets around most of the time. My sister, a resident of Salt Spring with two teenaged children, sold her car and bought an electric cargo bike. She paid PST.

By donating to the BC Cycling Coalition, you are supporting our efforts to make cycling safe, accessible and more comfortable for everyone in B.C.
Over the next few months, we will be focusing on encouraging the Provincial Government to make cycling a key part of their new Climate Leadership plan. Specially, we recommend that they invest $1 billion over the next 10 years to complete all ages and abilities cycling networks in communities around B.C and upgrade Provincial roads and bridges.
As well, we will be encouraging them to:
- support cycling education
- improve the Motor Vehicle Act to include a safe passing distance law and allowing riding two abreast
- Remove the PST on and add rebates for electric bikes
- reduce hazards and improve maintenance on roads and paths
- support cycling tourism
Your contribution is critical to help make this happen.
