I have often seen cars speeding and weaving through traffic on many of our streets and highways and want more speed controls and law enforcment to catch these speeders. I have often seen cars weaving erratically and pass by to often see the driver talking on the phone or texting. We need more enforcement to keep distracted drivers from causing accidents with other vehicles or wiping out cyclists in the (unsafe) painted lanes. I want safer cycling and walking – active transportation corridors. We need this now to reduce the amount of cars on our roads – with a safe passage I feel more people will take active transportation. I want a direct phone number I can call to report these infractions in real time (hands free, of course). I want to feel safer traveling throughout our city and province.

Yes, I want to be able to cycle away from cars on separated cycle highways throughout Metro Vancouver and BC. For my friends and family this will encourage us to take more trips by bicycle.

I am a senior who rides an ebike. This bike allows me to travel further and up steep hills and has now replaced my non ebike for shopping and appointments. I feel the PST needs to be eliminated from the ebike as it is very important for seniors to continue biking to destinations. My family also has a cargo bike with an e-assist battery. They often take me in the bucket for outings. Eliminating the PST for young families and seniors would be very helpful and encouraging to get people cycling more often.

Simply changing the wording on the MVA will enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users. Once the name of the act and guidelines for safe passing distance of 1.5m are approved the law can be enforced and education can begin. Please vote yes for the Village of Belcarra.

Mayors & Councillors Pass Motor Vehicle Act Improvements Resolution

Great news! Resolution B102: Updating the BC Motor Vehicle Act to Improve Safety for All Road Users passed at Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) conference. Thanks to the City of New Westminster for moving this resolution forward.

While this is a very important step forward, much work still needs to be done to help ensure that the BC Government updates the Motor Vehicle Act to make our roads safer for people walking and cycling.

Your donation will be a real help enabling us to reach more people and groups who support cycling and engage government officials. Please contribute today!

Proposed changes to improve the safety and comfort of people cycling, walking and using a wheelchair include:

    • Change of name of the act, as it applies to all modes, not just motor vehicles
    • Specify minimum passing distance of 1.5m for people cycling, walking and using a wheelchair
    • Legal definitions of bicycle lanes and separated cycling facilities to enable better enforcement against vehicles blocking bike lanes
    • Legalization of bicycle specific signals
    • Allowing riding two abreast
    • Removal or updated as near to the right clause
    • Enabling cities to create blanket speed limits less than 50 km/h
    • A default speed limit of 30 km/h on local neighbourhood streets (no centre line)

More information on the proposed changes here.

Please write your mayor and council thanking them for supporting the changes to the Motor Vehicle Act.

Your generous contribution will really help our efforts to encourage the Government to make roads safer for everyone cycling, walking and driving. Priorities include:

    • Decreasing driving by providing people with more cycling, walking and transit choices
    • Safer speed limits on highways and in communities
    • Increasing the number of red light cameras at intersections and using them for automated speed enforcement
    • Automated speed cameras which  could cut fatal & serious collisions by more than 1/3
    • Cracking down on distracted driving with increased penalties and greater enforcement
    • Doubling the number of roadside breath tests and significantly increasing penalties
