Arno; Active Transportation Strategy Announced; E-bikes; Join our Team

Hi

We are sad to report that Arno, our president, passed way three weeks ago. Arno was a champion of cycling for everyone at the local, provincial and national levels. He is really missed.

His legacy lives on. We had a meeting with Minister Trevena regarding the Province's Active Transportation Strategy that Arno arranged. More on Arno and his legacy here.

We are pleased to announce the BC Active Transportation Summit that will be held in New Westminster on June 17 and 18. Please save the date. We will send more details around soon. We are looking for a Summit Manager and two Summit Event Planners.

Please help us with our efforts to make cycling safer by contributing $5$10$15, or $20 per month or making a one-time donation to our efforts to make cycling safer. Thanks to you who have already contributed. Much appreciated!

Take Action: Act Now to Remove PST from electric assist bikes

The BC government has seen our calls for eliminating the PST on electric assist bicycles, and the budget committee has recommended it to the Province, but officials need to hear from more people like you to make a final decision.

Write to your elected officials today to let them know how you feel.

BC to Establish Active Transportation Strategy in 2019!

Good news! The BC government has stated it will establish an active transportation strategy in 2019 as part of it's CleanBC plan. This has been one of our top goals. Thanks to all of you who sent letters, signed the petition and donated to our campaigns. Your actions really make a difference!

While this is definitely great progress, still lots of work to be done to ensure that the B.C. Government develops a great active transportation strategy and invests enough to ensure everyone can ride a bike for their daily trips.

Your contributions enable us to more effectively build the support needed for increased funding and better policies for safe cycling.

Kids on Wheels

Kids on Wheels, the balance bike program of the BC Cycling Coalition, had a very busy summer! We reached a huge number of children through our Kids on Wheels Zones, daycare sessions, and new this year - community centre sessions! Those children are now more comfortable on a balance bike and have experienced the fun and freedom of biking.

Kids on Wheels Zones

We reached close to 400 children in our Kids on Wheels Zones at three major events in Vancouver. Main Street Car Free Day took place on a beautiful sunny day in June which attracted many people to a car free Vancouver. This was the third year Kids on Wheels took part at the event and 200 children rode our Kids on Wheels Zone throughout the day, making it one of the most popular children's activities of the event! Check out our photo gallery from the event as well as a short video.

During Main Street Car Free Day Shaw organized a special fundraising event for Kids on Wheels. Two stationary Mobi Bikes were in place and people took turns pedaling as fast as they could. The top speed of each person multiplied by 5 was the amount that was donated to the program. With great effort by everyone Shaw managed to raise $50,000 for Kids on Wheels! The top priority of this donation is to offer the Kids on Wheels five day program in daycares in various areas and to different populations in Vancouver as well as creating more Kids on Wheels Zones at major events. We are very grateful for this support and thank Shaw for their generous donation! Check out the cool video Shaw put together about the fundraiser.

For the first time we also set up a Kids on Wheels Zone during the Sport BC Summer Warm-up on Canada Day in Robson Square in the heart of downtown Vancouver! We also returned for the second year to Commercial Drive Car Free Day with yet another successful Kids on Wheels Zone!

Daycare Sessions

This summer we continued delivering our five day program, going to three different daycares in Vancouver reaching a total of 70 children. During the week the children gained a lot more confidence on the balance bikes and they improved their balancing and gliding skills dramatically. Quadra daycare in Point Grey became a regular client of Kids on Wheels. This was our third year there, and they have already asked us to come back next summer.

We also offered the program, with Shaw’s funding, at two more daycares. Bumble Bear, which is part of the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House and Eaglets Daycare of Britannia Community Services Centre.

“The families and children loved the program! (and so did staff!) One parent told me how impressed he was with his child’s progress. He said at the beginning of the week his child couldn’t get on a bike and by this past weekend, that’s all the child wanted to do! It was great to see the children grow so much in such a short amount of time. The program is set up so well and I like that it appeals to different interest areas – reading, painting, games and on the track children were able to race around or try the ropes and cones. Thank you”. Amanda, headteacher, Bumble Bear Daycare

Summer Camps at Community Centre

This summer we started offering Kids on Wheels as a registered one week summer camp style activity at Kitsilano Community Centre and Trout Lake Community Centre. We reached

60 children in four different sessions from early July till late August. All the sessions were full and had waiting lists. We have more community centers who are now interested, so stay tuned for more sessions in the spring and summer 2019!

Thank You!

Throughout all of our activities many children around Vancouver improved their riding, gliding and balance skills, gained confidence, learned some safety skills and rules of the road, and experienced the freedom of biking. Starting young is critical - those kids are the future and if we get them to start riding as young as possible we'll have more enthusiastic and responsible bike riders in the future!

Thank you to our awesome team: Caro, Emily & Beka (instructors), Julia & Edris (summer students), Gwyn (assistant), Melanie (volunteer) & Maya (program coordinator) and everyone else who helped out this summer. A big thank you to Shaw for their generous donation and supporting two of our sessions this year and many more next year. As always we couldn't have done it without the donations of bikes and helmets from: Strider Bikes, Firstbike Canada, Runners-Bike, MEC, Obsession: Bikes & Norco John Henry Bikes

$669 Million Surplus for BC, Time for Massive Investment in Cycling

The latest BC budget update forecasts a surplus of $669 million. A significant surplus should be used to help address the cycling and walking deficit we estimate to be at least $2 billion and perhaps as high as $10 billion. To enable everyone in BC to cycle safely for their daily trips, we are recommending that the BC Government invest at least $100 million per year in cycling and walking.

Please let the Premier know your scary experiences cycling in BC and investments you would like to see in your community. More here

Please let them know you want them to invest more in bike networks and provide financial incentives including rebates and low cost loans for bicycles, electric bikes and cargo bikes as well as eliminating the PST on electric bikes:

You can email submissions to: clean.growth@gov.bc.ca

Cycling Safety - Red Light Cameras, Shoulder Maintenance, Ride-hailing

Hi !

Some good news! Attorney General David Eby has announced that some red light cameras will be also used for speed enforcement on green lights.

This should prove to be an important cycling safety measure. A significant portion of cycling crashes and fatalities occur at intersections and high speeds are especially dangerous for people cycling and walking. As bike lanes are built on more roads reducing mid-block collisions, a higher percentage of cycling crashes will be at intersection. A good idea to send a quick thank you email.

We are busy working on lots of cycling and issues and opportunities. There will likely be consultation on the new provincial Climate Plan later on this year. More on this in the next newsletter. More immediately, is the need to ensure ride-hailing is safer for cycling and that shoulder maintenance is improved on provincial highways.

Please contribute $5$10$15, or $20 per month or making a one-time donation to our efforts to make cycling safer.

Better Maintenance of Shoulders Needed

The Ministry of Transportation will be renewing road maintenance contracts over the next few months. This is an opportunity to improve maintenance ensuring that shoulders are keep free of debris, cracks and other hazards.

Please write the Minister. Let her know of your scary experiences with poorly maintained shoulders and surfaces on Provincial roads.

Make Ride-hailing Safe for Cycling

The BC Government will likely be introducing ride-hailing legislation in the fall. Ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft, etc.) vehicles blocking bike lanes is a problem in several cities. Lets make sure this doesn't happen in Okanagan communities. We are proposing several measures to ensure ride-hailing does not make cycling more dangerous. These measures include a ride-hailing tax to fund protected bike lanes, zero tolerance for blocking bike lanes and increased fines for dooring.

Please write the Minister in support of these and other measures.

Cycling Safety - Red Light Cameras, Ride-hailing, Shoulder Maintenance; Summer Jobs - Victoria

More here.
