Margo Mactaggart commented on Rail Trails Emailer 2018-09-09 16:23:30 -0700I live in Vancouver, and since 2010 my husband and I have hosted (https://www.warmshowers.org/users/grey-hair) over 50 touring cyclists from 12 countries in Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Vancouver is the hub of their travels; they fly in with their bikes, and depart from our house for their travels. Most of them have heard of the Trans Canada Trail and of the Kettle Valley Railway, and many are planning to include it in their adventures.
Some return to us at the end of their journeys, and we keep in touch almost all of them. We are profoundly saddened to learn how disappointed most of them are after experiencing the reality of these trails. It’s the motorized traffic that has ruined the surface for cycling, and the fumes and noise of passing ATVs and dirt bikes that destroys their otherwise aesthetic experience. I’ve cycled parts of the KVR myself and completely understand.
As a British Columbian, I am embarrassed that we seem to lack the will and ability to keep these trails for whom they were originally intended, non-motorized users. Please save them as a natural draw for local and international travellers, and enforce a ban on motorized vehicles.
Margo Mactaggart commented on Seaside Greenway emailer 2017-09-28 22:07:11 -0700I urge the Park Board to improve the dangerous segment of the Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area immediately. This section from the Burrard Bridge west to Balsam Street is one of the last unsafe sections of the iconic 28 km Seaside Greenway.
As an active host in a network of touring cyclists (“Warmshowers”) , I often guide international visitors to see downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, and False creek by bike. We continue toward UBC and the Museum of Anthropology via the Seaside Route, and while I am proud of the recent developments of bike infrastructure in my city, I always feel a need to apologize for the glaringly unsafe Kits Park gap in what is an otherwise idyllic waterfront ride.
