Mid Vancouver Island Cycling Feasibility Study
The BC Cycling Coalition, working with our project partners including the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition and Friends of Rails to Trails Vancouver Island, is exploring the opportunities and viability for improving cycling transportation, recreation and tourism in the Mid Vancouver Island Region focusing on the Comox Valley Regional District. Both both road and off-road cycling opportunities are being explored.
We are engaging communities and stakeholders including First Nation and identify the priorities and key challenges for developing a robust and sustainable bicycle recreation and tourism sector within the region. This project is identifying practical strategies for further developing the world renowned trails and riding opportunities BC is known for, ensuring the economic and environmental sustainability of trails and recreation infrastructure, as well an enhancing the ability of residents of BC to participate and realize the benefits of cycling. We also engaging communities on the costs and benefits of building trails with higher quality surfaces that enable safe efficient longer distance cycling trips.
Working with partners, we are exploring models to move the implementation of trails forward and identifying segments of trails with high tourism and active transportation potential that could be implemented in the near future. This project is helping to build the support and background information required for possible future project applications including legacy trails and employment development grants.
