Cycling Safety - Red Light Cameras, Ride-hailing; Kids on Wheels; Jobs - Vancouver
Some good news! Attorney General David Eby has announced that some red light cameras will be also used for speed enforcement on green lights.
This should prove to be an important cycling safety measure. A significant portion of cycling crashes and fatalities occur at intersections and high speeds are especially dangerous for people cycling and walking. As bike lanes are built on more roads reducing mid-block collisions, a higher percentage of cycling crashes will be at intersection. A good idea to send a quick thank you email.
The Kids on Wheels Zone will be returning to Main Street Car Free Day on June 17 plus we are excited to be offering Kids on Wheels - Balance Bike Summer Camps at 2 Vancouver community centres (details below).
We are looking for Kids on Wheels Instructors and Our Community Bikes has 3 positions. More at: https://www.bccc.bc.ca/jobs
We are busy working on lots of cycling and issues and opportunities. There will likely be consultation on the new provincial Climate Plan later on this year. More on this in the next newsletter. More immediately, is the need to ensure ride-hailing is safer for cycling and that shoulder maintenance is improved on provincial highways.
The BC Government will likely be introducing ride-hailing legislation in the fall. Ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft, etc.) vehicles blocking bike lanes is a problem in several cities. Lets make sure this doesn't happen in Okanagan communities. We are proposing several measures to ensure ride-hailing does not make cycling more dangerous. These measures include a ride-hailing tax to fund protected bike lanes, zero tolerance for blocking bike lanes and increased fines for dooring.
Please write the Minister in support of these and other measures.
The Ministry of Transportation will be renewing road maintenance contracts over the next few months. This is an opportunity to improve maintenance ensuring that shoulders are keep free of debris, cracks and other hazards.
Please write the Minister. Let her know of your scary experiences with poorly maintained shoulders and surfaces on Provincial roads.
Kids on Wheels is proud to offer week long summer camp sessions. The camp is for ages 2.5-5 and designed for all levels - from beginners to advanced riders. Children will ride balance bikes with skilled instructors in a safe environment while having fun and learning important skills. Bikes and helmets are provided for the week.
