    I would like to say thank you for changing the red light cameras to also monitor speed at intersections. As a pedestrian I have found this to be a big issue in the city and I’m glad to see there are measures being taken to curb this behavior.

    I have just started riding my bike to work during bike to work/school week. Although I have always biked for fun with my family, it was by no means a daily occurrence. I would like to be able to keep doing it, to the point that I am prepared to have our two car family be one. It is good exercise, takes a car off the road, is a clean source of transportation, and economic. However, now that I am riding I realize how challenging some areas are, although we have some areas of North Vancouver that are vastly improved with bike paths and lanes, speeding cars, distracted drivers and people running red lights is a problem. I have already experienced this first hand in only 7 days of daily riding. As the population continues to grow, lets get more kids and adults on their feet, and on their bikes. Improved enforcement at traffic lights, and speed enforcement could slow people down, and safe a life. We need to continue to make our communities safe and accessible, and more people will be willing to give this transportation alternative a try.

    Thank you for your recent policy decision using red light cameras for speed enforcement. This will not only benefit vulnerable road users but also motorists and other travelers. Similar initiatives and additional speed control measures will lead to lower death, injury and insurance costs.

    I support red light cameras at all locations possible. I also support speed cameras.


    Speed camera only capture a specific point on a route, better than nothing. But here’s an idea I saw on a recent vacation.


    Point to point speed cameras. On certain route the camera is installed and captures the licence plate image. At a further distance up the road another camera captures the same licence plate image. Using a calculation the determination is made if the motor vehicle was speeding between the two camera points. Seems like an excellent way to control speed along highway corridors and minimize police resources.


    Something needs to be done, road rage and serious accidents are daily events. Police are too busy dealing with violent and organized crime to enforce traffic laws.

    Dear Sirs/Madame:

    As a cyclist, I should like to extend my sincerest appreciation to you for taking a proactive and life-saving step for cyclists and pedestrians, by opting to use red light cameras for speed enforcement at dangerous intersections. The wife of one of my cycling buddy’s experienced a run-in with a vehicle at an intersection, while cycling; arriving at the four-way stop intersection first, she had the right of way but the vehicle to her right opted to turn into the intersection, after she had entered it. The driver said that he did not see her and so believed it was safe to make a left hand turn.


    While it is imperative that cyclists and pedestrians follow the rules governing their mode of travel, they will always come out the loser when in a crash with a motor vehicle, no matter who is/was in the right. As the saying goes, “Better to be a wronged right than a dead right!”

    While I appreciate the green light camera initiative I still do not feel safe cycling on roads as is the requirement outside of major cities. My city of Kamloops has limited cycling infrastructure.


    Speeding on roads has become normalized over the years. Every time I drive my vehicle there are speeders constantly passing.


    I can’t recall the last time speeding enforcement occurred in this city.


    We need dedicated cycling infrastructure now or controls to ticket and discourage any speeding.

    We are very much in favour of using red light camera for speed enforcement.

    We frequently bike and walk, and we feel that upgrading the red light cameras to also detect speeding drivers will be a very cost-effective way to improve safety.

    I was hit by a driver turning right while I was cycling. Luckily I made a full recovery but awareness is what we need to prevent these accidents.

    I want to extend my thanks for the government’s plans to upgrade red light cameras to catch speeding motorists at dangerous intersections. However, I would urge you to lower the speed at which motorists will be ticketed since 70 km/h is much to hazardous. Even vehicles going at 50 km/h can cause serious injuries to cyclists and pedestrians, if not actual fatalities. Please consider 1) smaller fines on motorists going 5 km/h over the speed limit at intersections favoured by cyclists and pedestrians, 2) reducing the speed limit to 30 km/h at these intersections – an even safer option.


    Like every cyclists, I’ve had my share of close encounters with speeding or discourteous motorists. A few years ago, I was almost sideswiped by a motorist who illegally crossed into my lane and the next in order to go onto the Hwy 1 on ramp. There was a solid white line telling him he could only turn left onto the street. This occurred at the Lynn Valley-Boulevard Crescent and Hwy 1 overpass. I was travelling west on Lynn Valley Rd., while the motorist came from Morgan Rd. headed for the on ramp. I do not think that the new improvements to this area, with the new cycling lane and green bike areas, will prevent my situation from recurring. I did contact the district, but they did not really acknowledge or address the problem. Related to this is the situation going in the opposite direction on Boulevard Cres., where drivers routinely drive into the green bike lane to get onto the ramp leading to Vancouver. I think some type of physical barrier is needed for both situations. This is the only way to stop drivers from taking illegal short cuts. I’ve seen parents sometimes biking with their kids along this route and shudder every time, thinking of the possible collisions caused by impatient, distracted, or drunk motorists.


    I am hopeful that the NDP government will continue to move forward to protect cyclists and pedestrians at dangerous intersections.

    Yay! I support the use of red light cameras. It is too bad that it comes to this.Drivers are absolutely aware that vehicles must stop at a red light as they have passed their drivers licence test; as well as stopping at the white line before “creeping” forward. I believe in awareness, education then penalty – no qualified driver can claim they are unaware or uneducated in this simple rule. Time for a penalty before a maiming or death punishes more with the guilt and anguish of the red light runner.

    Dear premier, ministers and attorney general,


    I’m a daily bicycle commuter and in the past year I witnessed a crash between two cars that really rattled me. I was stopped on my bike at an intersection, and when the light turned green, I started to move forward and so did the car beside me. Right before my eyes, before I can fully comprehend what’s happening, a car from the cross traffic sped through (on it’s red light) and hit the passenger side of the car that had moved past me into the intersection.


    If I had moved into the intersection a few seconds faster on my bike, I would have been the one this speeding car collided into. It would probably have been fatal. I stayed at the scene to help the victim of the collision — the driver was very shaken and disoriented, her passenger was not able to move out from the car and police and ambulance had to be called.


    There have been other times during these past years of daily commuting that I’ve seen cars run the red light and luckily not hit anything. But this incident really struck home how much damage can be done in a split second, just from someone not paying attention and NOT SLOWING DOWN.


    I urge you to do everything you can to support using red light cameras to ensure vehicles travel slow enough to prevent these type of crashes.

    Thank you for instituting red light cameras at some intersections for speed enforcement on green lights. Speeding is a factor in many collisions where a motor vehicle hits a cyclist. These cameras will be helpful in providing evidence when a speeding car driver hits a cyclist in an intersection.

    Dear Premier Horgan, Ministers Eby, Trevena & Farnsworth,


    First I want to congratulate you on what a great job you have been doing in government. You have had to make many hard decisions and I think you have done a great job.


    I am specifically writing to thank you for putting money into red light cameras at intersections. This is surprising for me as I HATED the previous use of speed cameras . but, iIn intersections they are perfect. i am an active motorcycle and bicycle rider. I am well aware of the dangers of people running red lights or not paying attention at intersections. I commonly see people run red lights or “push” lights. I really believe that people will slow down in intersections if they think they will get a ticket and accident rates will drop.


    I want to thank you for making the decision to go forward with this idea.


    Now on another note ! good luck with the Massey Tunnel replacemet!

    As a pedestrian, cyclist, and motorist I would like to thank you for adding speed enforcement to red light cameras. I feel that the speed of travel of autos and trucks in Vancouver is a major safety issue, and this is a small step in the right direction. Keep up the good work.

    Thank You for the red light camera speed enforcement making cycling and walking safer. Twinning the George Massey Tunnel with a separate bike path with be AWESOME.

    I ride over the Alex Fraser bridge and it is a daunting process.

    I have always lamented that many in our society reject the use of speed-trap cameras. The simple job of enforcing safe driving speeds can be easily automated for reduced costs and increased safety to the public. Kudos to you for improving safety in our province. Thank You.
