SUPPORT SAFE ACCESS FOR ALL TO SEASIDE GREENWAY- ACT NOW!
UPDATE: February 9, 2018
Our action so far has brought us to the point where the Seaside Greenway Kits area is finally being brought to Park Board for a decision on Monday, March 12 (previously scheduled for Feb 19) and we need to let Park Board know what we want!
The following is what we’re asking everyone to do:
Write to all seven Park Board Commissioners about this issue. You can write your own message or use or modify the text directly below by copying & pasting in the message sender on the right.
Subject: Excited for an Improved Seaside Greenway Kits Area
At your meeting on Monday, March 12, I urge you to vote for a safe and delightful Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area. The Greenway should be a park and seaside experience for both people walking and biking, similar in design and intent throughout the 28 km of Greenway.
This is an important moment for cycling in parks in the City. Park Board staff have been saying that Park Board wants cycling to, not through parks. This could really affect the great recreational, transportation and environmental synergies that cycling and parks share.
Commissioners, I want to be able to bike in the park with the children in my life learning to ride, the older family and friends who are less stable and all of the rest of us who love to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the exercise of biking! Bonus, we can get to the park in a non-polluting manner as well!
The Seaside Greenway Kits Beach area bike routing on the narrow shared path by the sea as well as on the roads by the parks is dangerous and not enjoyable year round. Improvements need to be made.
Although the scope of this project currently doesn’t include east of Maple Street, we encourage Park Board to work with Engineering staff to take this opportunity to look for a routing along the north side of Ogden Ave (to avoid legal issues with adjacent Hadden Park) and to connect in a safe way to the path through Vanier Park.
I look forward to being able to bike safely and with the enjoyment of sea and park in that area and to have a chance to provide feedback at a public consultation.
Save the date. If you are able to, plan to speak at the Park Board meeting on Monday, March 12 (previously scheduled for Feb 19) at the Park Board office downtown. Please contact Lisa at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in learning more about this option. Your voice can have a huge impact.
HUB members have been meeting with Park Board and City Engineering staff as well as representatives from a few local community groups in the Kits Beach area. These meetings have been challenging at times, but there have also been some shared views and sharing of information overall as we move forward to design ideas. During this process, we’ve come up with a list of principles that are guiding HUB with respect to improving the Seaside Greenway in the area.
Thank you for supporting the completion of the Seaside Greenway through the Kitsilano Beach area, your letter really helps!
