Just a quick note to show my support for the seaside greenway. I have two small children and we live close by. Whenever we try to walk along the path behind the sand there are constantly bikes zipping past at unsafe speeds. It’s incredibly unsafe to walk along this path with small kids, even close to the park. There needs to be better separation between pedestrians and bicyclists for everyone’s safety.

    Thanks for reading.

The proposed bike path that parallels Cornwall Ave is very much needed to increase the safety and convenience of all users of the park. At the current time cyclists use the parking lot at the risk to both vehicles parking and unparking, the passengers of those vehicles which are often young children and cyclists. Cyclists then proceed onto a narrow shared path with people, dogs and baby carriages on and cutting across the path. With the proposed bike path, cyclists would be removed from both the parking lot and shared path leaving these to the other users of those facilities.

An alternative would be to create a separated bike lane along Cornwall from Arbutus to Trafalgar that connects to the separated bike lane on Point Grey Road. This would be much more expensive than simply extending the existing bike path the one block from Arbutus to Yew St. just inside the park. If however, money is available, the separated bike lane may be what keeps all parties happy with the exception of those who currently use the parking spaces there but even then, if Cornwall is reduced to one lane heading west, then the parking could be retained as well.

I’d rather you rip up parking spots and put in a barrier to create a safe protected bicycle path, than cut down trees. But it have been built years ago, just build it already.

Please have the political strength to make the right decision to make this bike lane happen for the sake of our children and their grandma both of whom bike.

At your meeting on Monday, March 12, I urge you to vote for a safe and delightful Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area. The Greenway should be a park and seaside experience for both people walking and biking, similar in design and intent throughout the 28 km of Greenway.

This is an important moment for cycling in parks in the City. Park Board staff have been saying that Park Board wants cycling to, not through parks. This could really affect the great recreational, transportation and environmental synergies that cycling and parks share.

Commissioners, I want to be able to bike in the park with the children in my life learning to ride, the older family and friends who are less stable and all of the rest of us who love to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the exercise of biking! Bonus, we can get to the park in a non-polluting manner as well!

The Seaside Greenway Kits Beach area bike routing on the narrow shared path by the sea as well as on the roads by the parks is dangerous and not enjoyable year round. Improvements need to be made.

Although the scope of this project currently doesn’t include east of Maple Street, we encourage Park Board to work with Engineering staff to take this opportunity to look for a routing along the north side of Ogden Ave (to avoid legal issues with adjacent Hadden Park) and to connect in a safe way to the path through Vanier Park.

I look forward to being able to bike safely and with the enjoyment of sea and park in that area and to have a chance to provide feedback at a public consultation.

I urge you to vote to pass the purposed path of the Seaside Greenway bike route in Kits Beach. As a father of 4 I’ve often been both scared and aghast at the fact that the otherwise AAA Seaside bike route goes through an extremely busy car park and new forces eastbound cyclists to turn left onto a busy summertime access street. Please fix this last unsafe link in an otherwise world class bike route, before someone gets hurt.

My wife and I regularly walk or run along the paths around Kits beach and while they’re beautiful they’re also dangerous! The narrow paths are too busy for the number of pedestrians, children, runners and cyclists on the path. Adopting the staff’s recommendation will make the paths safer with minimal cost and disruption to the natural beauty of the area.

Don’t be discouraged by the vocal minority, these changes are for the good of Vancouver.

A proper, separated cycling path through the Kitsilano/Seaside area would make the area more enjoyable and safer for those of choose to ride to this beautiful part of Vancouver.

Proper, separated bike paths also make things safer for pedestrians and drivers.

I urge you to support a safe Seaside Greenway route that will protect cyclists of all ages and abilities.

While the scope of this project doesn’t extend East of Maple St., I encourage Park Board to work with Engineering staff to look for more routes connecting Vanier Park to the Seawall. This is a beautiful potential link between East and West Vancouver, but the current setup does not allow for a fun, stress-free ride from Ontario St. through to Kitsilano Beach. It’s a wasted opportunity to take advantage of our local beauty.

In addition, please consider more bike racks at this park as they take up virtually no space. The current setup means I visit the park far less than I normally would. I do not drive.

Forcing cyclists to ride through a parking lot is so dangerous, it’s practically criminal! Although I no longer live in the Lower Mainland, I like to think my opinion counts.

I would like to add my voice in support of separated pedestrian/cycling infrastructure through Kits Beach Park. This park is a gap in our network and will add to the comfort of pedestrian and cyclist alike. I have heard concerns over the removal of parkland and would like to propose that an equivalent amount of currently asphalted land in the two parking lots be restored to parkland so there is no net loss. By my calculations this would be a 30m x 30m area.

    Hello Park Board,

I have been a resident of Vancouver since 2012 and have lived in various neighbourhoods, including Kitsilano. I have a car which I use for long distance trips but I also cycle, walk, and use transit in our city. I support the establishment of a safe, separated bike path through or next to Kits Beach. I’m not particular on the location, but I trust that through the lengthy consultation process of this route, the best option has been selected. I support the staff recommendations and urge you to implement without delay.

    Thanks and Kind Regards,

    Laurel Eyton.

Please build a separated bike path through Seaside Greenway
  • commented 2018-03-12 14:40:19 -0700
The existing designated bikeway sends cyclists (of which there are many year-round an especially during peak season) through a very dangerous and unsafe parking lot. I have had many near misses in the parking lot, including a memorable time a tour bus nearly backed into me and my children. It is a real nightmare for those of us who ride with children and we need a viable alternative to this unsafe route. It is an accident waiting to happen.
  • commented 2018-03-12 14:37:40 -0700
On behalf of my two young daughters, Ashlynn age 4 and Kayla age 7, I’m writing you to strongly support the Seaside Greenway route in Kits park. We use this bike path on a weekly basis to play at the park, swimming, on our way to Granville island and Karate Lessons. As it currently exists these improvements are badly needed. It’s just not safe for my two daughters. Thank you for your time and consideration.
  • commented 2018-03-12 14:34:23 -0700
Look, I’m a terrible driver. I get road ragey, I’m often sleep deprived and I’m just not very good at it. So I’ve committed myself to a life of cycling. It is safer for everyone else with me off the road.

But now I have young kids, 6 and 4 years old. And we ride as best we can everywhere, but our cycling infrastructure is just not safe enough when viewed through the eyes of a child, 1m tall. It feels so strange to make a choice to keep others safe but not have those people return the same respect.

So I urge you to fix this corridor to keep me and my kids safely riding. Getting kids out of that parking lot will also protect bad drivers like me from ever injuring one of them. Everyone is safer in the long run. Please support cycling improvements in this area.

I hope you will consider installation of a proper cycle path to and through Kits Park. We already have the beautiful Seaside Greenway on each side of the park. The only thing missing is the the piece in the middle to connect it all up and that is Kitsilano Park. What an opportunity to make a huge improvement to the park and a safer route for all those that will use it, especially kids and the less young amongst us. Let’s bring the park up to standards with this positive addition. Cycling is a perfect recreational activity suited to parks. Thank you for your consideration.

    Good afternoon Commissioners,

This evening you will have the opportunity to create safer cycling for families, visitors to the city and local residents such as myself when you vote on the Seaside Greenway in Kitsilano – and I urge you to vote in favour of a separated path for cyclists that will safely take people from the park onto Point Grey Road. In the three years that I have lived on 4th and Larch, I have nearly been knocked off my bike on several occasions trying to enter or exit the park due to the current routing forcing riders to contend with a busy junction where cars are often turning right on red from Cornwall. I also on one occasion had to break so sharply to avoid a child that ran in front of me on the path that I came off my bike

I urge you to vote for a safe and delightful Seaside Greenway route in the Kitsilano Beach area.

By creating a safe route through the park, linking the protected lanes at Point Grey to the Seawall, you have the opportunity to create one of North America’s best (and safest) cycling routes. Please seize this opportunity before a collision or serious injury occurs, as everyone should be able to enjoy Vancouver’s parks whether on foot or bike.

Although the scope of this project currently doesn’t include east of Maple Street, I encourage Park Board to work with Engineering staff to take this opportunity to look for a routing along the north side of Ogden Ave (to avoid legal issues with adjacent Hadden Park) and to connect in a safe way to the path through Vanier Park.

I look forward to being able to bike safely and with the enjoyment of sea and park in that area and to have a chance to provide feedback at a public consultation.

Commissioners, I want to be able to cycle in the park with my four year old son who is still learning to ride, and not have to worry about being struck by a moving vehicle!

The Seaside Greenway Kits Beach area bike routing on the narrow shared path by the sea as well as on the roads by the parks becomes congested and is not enjoyable year round. Improvements need to be made.

I have seen the recent proposal in the media on completing the seaside greenway to and through Kits Beach. I would like to register my full support for this project.

While I am not a full-time cyclist, my family and I regularly enjoy cycling down to the beach to get some fresh air and to enjoy the outdoors. However, without a safe path through Kits beach we rarely make it any further to Jericho or Locarno. When we do, typically it means that we’re avoiding cars in the parking lot and the road. The lack of a safe option has made these other beaches inaccessible to us. Having a dedicated bike lane will increase accessibility of all parks for us, and will increase safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

I urge you to make the parks accessible for all.
  • commented 2018-03-12 12:07:16 -0700
A complete, separated Seaside Greenway through Kitsilano Beach means I can enjoy cycling through the park as much as I now enjoy walking through the park. Right now, to cycle through the park means riding through a parking lot and on poorly demarcated paths that are barely wide enough for pedestrians.

Let’s continue to improve the south side of False Creek so that it is as awesome for pedestrians and cyclists as the north side.

Kits beach park bike path – your second worst idea, after pay parking at Spanish Banks (for which no parks commissioner will ever get my vote for any office in the future)! But that’s the way Vancouver politics seems to work nowadays … token public consultation after the decisions have been made behind closed doors. Listen to the people, not just Bike Hub!

I am so excited by the possibility of an improvement to the existing bike infrastructure along this route. This is certainly long overdue and I believe the options brought forth will be addressing a very important issue.

As a father I love riding with my kid along the amazing bike routes in this city but I am always very nervous having to ride through the parking lot and having to ride near awestruck pedestrians checking out the view and not paying attention to where they’re going. And really why should they have to watch out for bikes along here when they’re trying to enjoy a nice walk by the seaside? Let’s get bikes and pedestrians their own safe and separate paths.

Please don’t listen to the antibike crusaders and the NIMBY associations. Please vote yes to a bike path off road and separated from pedestrians for a safer Kits beach experience!

    Thanks so much for listening.

Please encourage the safe passage of bicycles through our city.

    This includes Kits Beach!

Bicycles are the future, more bike routes are the future also.

Safe passage to the parks, around the parks and the seawall are essential.
