What to Wear

Riding a bicycle can be part of any lifestyle—with a few modifications you can wear almost anything.

Dress for Comfort and Style

  • If it feels right, you should probably wear it cycling!

  • Wear any type of footwear cycling; soft soles can transmit pressure from standard pedals and be less comfortable.

  • Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing to stay cool and dry.

  • Use padded shorts for comfort when cycling long distances; they can be worn under regular shorts or skirts.

Dress for Safety

  • Wrap long dresses and skirts, baggy trousers, and pant cuffs to keep them from getting caught in the chain or wheel spokes and causing a fall.

    • Tie up all loose fabrics

    • Use pant clips or leg bands (or roll up your pant legs)

    • Add a chain guard and wheel guard to your bike

  • Wear bright-coloured clothing, reflective material, or a safety vest to make you more visible to other road users and reduce collision risk.

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands in case of a fall, or from blisters.

Dress for the Weather

  • Use warm, waterproof, and windproof capes and jackets to keep cycling in all weather conditions.

  • Dress in layers to accommodate temperature changes.

  • In cold weather, wear gloves that allow you to operate the brake levers and gear shifters.

  • When it rains, wear waterproof shoes, or add shoe covers or ‘booties’ to keep dry.
