B.C.’s many different types of communities, varied landscapes, and extensive trail networks provide countless opportunities for exploration by bike. Cycling is a great way to see and do things that might not be possible on foot or in a vehicle.

Cycling is affordable

Riding a bicycle for everyday transportation can be a huge cost savings for many people, especially when considering monthly and annual savings from the cost of fuel, insurance, maintenance, and parking. Most bicycles cost a fraction of the cost of a motor vehicle, and are available at almost any budget. In terms of the overall economic impact of transportation on society, a bicycle is among the most beneficial and cost-effective travel modes.

Cycling is fun

When you ride a bike, you can see, feel, hear, and interact with the world in unique ways; cycling makes many people feel exhilaration and joy.

Cycling is green

Cycling produces no CO2 or any other greenhouse gas emissions. Bicycles also make very little noise. Of all travel modes, only walking has less of an impact on our natural world than a bicycle.

Cycling is healthy

Riding a bicycle can strengthen your heart and immune system, lower blood cholesterol, and reduce stress. Changes in breathing and blood flow from riding a bike can improve your strength, energy, and mood, as well as overall mental health. And since cycling improves so many quality of life factors, more people cycling (and walking) can improve overall population health across entire communities.

When safe, connected routes are available, cycling is a fast and easy alternative to most other travel modes, for most types of trips. Cycling can even be faster than driving or using transit! Bicycles provide flexibility for door-to-door travel, whether used in combination with other modes or on their own. 

Cycling is social

Riding a bicycle is a great way to spend time with people. On a bike, you can hang out with family or friends, make new connections (on the trail, or while waiting for the light to change), be part of a group, and support a social cause. When social distancing is required for health reasons, a bicycle is a great way to be with others and stay connected.
