Kids on Wheels
MISSION: TO INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO THE JOY OF CYCLING
Our mission is to introduce young children in British Columbia to the joy of cycling and active, outdoor, sustainable lifestyles by empowering them to use balance bikes and engaging them through fun classroom activities.
VISION: THAT EVERY CHILD IN BC WILL KNOW HOW TO RIDE BY AGE 5
Our vision is that every child in British Columbia will know how to ride a bike by age 5 and that cycling will become a core part of their lives, leading to increased health, wellness, and a better environment.
Kids on Wheels is an innovative program to introduce young children to the joy of cycling and active, outdoor, sustainable lifestyles. The program teaches and empowers children under five to ride balance bikes in a safe, interactive environment in their daycares. We come to daycares with our skilled instructors and run a five day program in which children ride balance bike outside, practice stopping and turning and enjoy the freedom of cycling! We also do activities about cycling, like reading books and art projects. They also practice pumping tubes in our mechanic corner, learn about commuting by bicycle as well as travelling by bike. On Friday we end the week with a bike celebration with the parents!
KIDS ON WHEELS BALANCE BIKE CAMPS: NEW AT SUMMER 2018!
Kids on Wheels is proud to offer week long balance bike summer camp sessions in Kits Community Centre and Trout Lake Community Centre in July and August 2018.
This week long camp is designed to introduce young children, ages 2.5-5, to the joy of cycling. Children will ride balance bikes (no-pedal bikes) with skilled instructors in a safe environment while having fun and playing games, learning important skills such as stopping, balancing and gliding. Balance bikes help children to gain confidence, improve their self esteem and risk management. In addition the children will learn some road signs and safety rules of the road. The camp is designed for all levels - from beginners to advanced riders. Join us for a fun week! Bikes and helmets are provided for the week.

Some great coverage of Kids on Wheels in Vancity Buzz by Melissa & Chris Bruntlett . Kids on wheels introduces young children to cycling through hands on experience with runner bikes, cycling toys, art and books. “There is still a lot of car culture embedded in the way young children play,” states Goldstein, referring to the car mats, trucks, and toy cars prevalent in daycares. “I wanted to help bring bike culture into that environment.” Goldstein set to work developing a five day, age appropriate program, combining 45-minutes of in-class learning with equal time experience learning on balance (pedal-less) bikes. “It’s amazing to watch them grow in ability and confidence over the course of the five days.” Goldstein recalls. Through a grant from MEC, as well as support from the BC Cycling Coalition, she has been able to offer the program at two daycares in East Vancouver, as well as two separate sessions at Berwick Daycare in UBC.
